How to watch a game later without spoilers
The checklist for a spoiler-free replay: mute keywords, silence score alerts, fix your lock screen and widgets, and set one rule for the group chat.
The match kicks off while you're at a wedding, on a flight or putting kids to bed. You've got the replay saved and three hours of careful silence ahead. Then you pick up your phone to check the time, and the final score is sitting on the lock screen. Staying spoiler-free isn't willpower. It's about ten minutes of setup before the game starts.
Step 1: Shut down the places scores arrive on their own
Most spoilers aren't things you go looking for. They're pushed to you.
- Sports and news app alerts. On iPhone, go to Settings > Notifications, tap each sports or news app, and switch off Allow Notifications for the evening. Turning off just the sound isn't enough; the banner still shows the score.
- Notification previews. In Settings > Notifications > Show Previews, set previews to hide until Face ID or your passcode opens the phone, or to Never. Messages then show only the app name.
- Lock screen and home screen widgets. A live score widget will happily show the result the moment you glance down. Remove it, or swap to a widget page with no sports on it.
- Live score cards on the lock screen. If you started following a game earlier, end that live score card before the final whistle.
- Your watch. It mirrors your phone's alerts. Put it on Do Not Disturb or take it off.
Step 2: Mute the words, not just the accounts
Most social apps let you mute words and phrases, usually under privacy or content settings. Mute these for 24 hours:
- Both team names and common nicknames.
- The competition name and match hashtag, plus the star player's surname.
- Result words: "final score," "FT," "highlights," "full-time."
Stay off video apps entirely until you've watched. Thumbnails and autoplay previews often show the reaction shot that gives the result away, and no mute list catches a picture.
The safest spoiler filter is a phone that stays face down until the replay starts.
Step 3: Set the group-chat rule before kickoff
The group chat leaks more results than any app. Send one message before the game: "Watching tomorrow, no scores in here please." Then make it easy for friends to keep their side of the deal:
- Mute the chat until you've finished. You won't see previews or badges.
- Ask for a reaction, not a result. "Worth watching?" is the only question anyone should answer, and the only safe answer is "Yes, just watch it."
- Return the favor. When a friend is watching later, put scores in your own thread or wait for their all-clear.
Step 4: Watch the replay without tripping over the result
Spoilers can still sneak in during the replay itself.
- Hide the progress bar. A scrub bar showing 40 minutes left in a soccer match tells you there's stoppage time or extra time. Tap the screen as little as possible.
- Start from the beginning, not the "highlights" tile. Highlight thumbnails are cut around the goals.
- Skip the pre-menu. Some apps open recorded games with a recap card. Go straight to the full replay.
If you set up a living-room screen first, our guide to replacing every remote with your phone keeps the phone useful without opening anything that might show a score.
For your own sports app, Floodlights has a spoiler shield that hides scores for one team or for everything until you tap, across the Today screen, the widget, the Live Activity and your Apple Watch. It needs no account and is free with no subscription.
Set it up once and the next late replay feels live again, right down to the last-minute goal.
