Offline with no account is the filter for this list, because that is exactly what Pocket's shutdown took away. When Mozilla closed Pocket in November 2025, a decade of saved articles disappeared for millions of people, and the lesson was not that read-later apps are bad but that a reading list on someone else's server is a loan. The obvious replacements are Instapaper and Matter. Both are good readers and both have the same shape as Pocket: an account, a sync service, and a subscription (Instapaper Premium at about $60 a year, Matter at a similar price) to unlock full-text search, unlimited highlights or text-to-speech. If you read across a phone, a tablet and a laptop and want the list everywhere, that is a fair trade and one of them will serve you well. Stowed makes the other trade. It imports your Pocket export, stores the article text on the phone, reads it aloud offline, and never asks you to create anything. There is no sync, so your list lives on one device; in exchange it cannot vanish when a company changes its mind, and it costs nothing per month.
