About this app
What Reckon does
Free. All features included. Point the camera at a math problem (typed or handwritten). Tap the shutter. Reckon reads the equation with Apple's on-device Vision OCR, evaluates it with a pure-Swift expression engine, and shows the answer in big calm type. It works on a plane. It works in a basement. It works at the school whose Wi-Fi has been broken since October. There is no internet call. There is no account. There is no subscription. — Live camera with a satisfying shutter and an instant 1-second answer. — Shows the parsed equation above the answer so you can verify the OCR read your handwriting correctly. Tap to correct. — 'Show steps' toggle — see the substep-by-substep evaluation (e.g. 2 + 3 × 4 → 2 + 12 → 14). Honest math, no fake AI 'explanation.' — History tab logs every solve locally with image preview, parsed equation, answer, and timestamp. Tap any past solve to re-run or copy. — Manual entry tab — type an equation when you don't want to lift the camera. — Settings: decimal precision, haptic feedback on result, dark/light theme. Reckon handles arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, parentheses, exponents, decimals, simple fractions. Algebra and calculus are intentionally out of scope — this app does one thing well.
Features
Built to be useful, not noisy.
Live camera with on-device OCR
Tap the shutter. Reckon captures the frame, runs VNRecognizeTextRequest, and extracts the math text. ~0.5–1.5 seconds depending on device. No frames are uploaded anywhere.
Pure-Swift expression evaluator
Recursive-descent parser handles + − × ÷ % parentheses exponents decimals fractions with correct operator precedence and associativity. Pure Swift, zero dependencies, ~250 LoC.
Edit-before-solve
After OCR, the parsed equation appears prominently above the answer. If Vision misread your handwriting, tap to edit. Solves recompute instantly.
Show steps
Toggle in the result card. Reveals the substep-by-substep evaluation (e.g., 2 + 3 × 4 → 2 + 12 → 14). Honest arithmetic — not fake AI 'tutor.'
History
Every solve is logged via SwiftData: the captured image thumbnail, the parsed equation, the answer, and the timestamp. Tap any row to re-open and re-edit.
Manual entry
Second tab. Type an equation. Same evaluator. Useful when you don't want to lift the camera (or you're inside without a printout).

What's different
How Reckon stands out
Reckon is the only math camera that is (a) fully on-device — VNRecognizeTextRequest + pure-Swift expression evaluator, zero network calls, works in airplane mode, (b) one-time $4.99 vs Photomath Premium $9.99/mo, (c) calm UX — no ads, no AI-tutor upsell, no daily-solve cap, (d) shows the parsed equation prominently so…
