Best fitness & workout apps with no subscription, 2026
Fitness is the category where subscriptions have become the default. Most workout apps charge between $60 and $120 a year, and the reason is structural: they sell programs, coaching and cloud sync, and those things have ongoing costs. The problem is that most people do not need a program. They need a timer that runs in the background, a place to write down what they lifted, or a log of how a symptom is trending, and none of those need a server.
The apps below do the small job. Interval timers that you can read from across the gym. A lift log that tracks personal records without a coach reading over your shoulder. Run, swim and climb logbooks that store the session on the phone. Health diaries for blood pressure, migraines, seizures, menopause symptoms and post-surgery drains that produce the report a clinician actually asks for.
What you give up is the social layer: no leaderboards, no shared plans, no automatic sync to a watch dashboard on someone else's website. If your motivation comes from a community feed, a subscription app will serve you better. If it comes from seeing your own numbers move, these do that without asking for a card.
