About this app

What Unclench does

Unclench interrupts daytime jaw clenching at the moment it happens, instead of waiting for you to do exercises later. Up to 23% of adults clench their jaw during the day — usually unconsciously while focused on a screen — and TMJ disorders affect 12 million Americans. Every existing TMJ app focuses on scheduled exercise sessions (JawBuddy's 21-day program, JawSense exercise library, Kieferfreund). None of them ask you, in the middle of your workday, 'check your jaw right now.' That's the thing that retrains the habit. What Unclench does: — Random check-ins throughout the day. Pick a frequency (every 10/20/30 minutes) and active hours. The app pings you with a haptic and a 5-second drill: tongue on the roof of your mouth, teeth slightly apart, lips together. Tap whether you were clenched when the ping fired. — Pattern surfacing. After a week, see your clench-rate by hour of day. Some people clench at 11am on conference calls; some after 4pm. The data identifies the trigger window. — Optional nighttime grinding check. Place the phone face down on the nightstand; AVFoundation samples ambient audio in 30-second windows and flags peaks consistent with grinding using an on-device CoreML classifier. No audio ever leaves the phone. — Jaw exercise drawer. Six clinician-recommended TMJ stretches with photos and timed cues. Open whenever; not required. — Apple Watch haptic option. The wrist tap is more catchable mid-meeting than a phone notification. All offline. SwiftData log on-device. No subscription. No 21-day program guilt loop. Just the check-in your jaw needs.

Why it exists

The problem

Awake bruxism causes TMJ pain in millions of US adults, but every TMJ app uses scheduled exercise programs — none interrupt clenching at the moment it's happening, which is the only intervention that retrains the unconscious habit.

What's different

How Unclench stands out

Unclench is the only TMJ/bruxism app that fires randomized check-in haptics during the workday (configurable hours + frequency) to interrupt unconscious clenching in vivo and logs your clench-rate by hour to surface trigger windows — JawBuddy is a 21-day scheduled program, JawSense exercise library requires their hard…
