Best notes & journal apps with no subscription, 2026

Notes and productivity apps went subscription because sync went subscription. Once an app promises that a note typed on your phone appears on your laptop, it needs servers, accounts and a way to pay for both, and a monthly fee is the honest way to do that. The cost is that the app also becomes a place you rent: stop paying and the export button is the only thing left.

The apps here are single-device by design. Read-later that stores the article on the phone and reads it aloud offline. Flashcards with spaced repetition and no paywall. A focus timer built around ADHD time-blindness that parks the intrusive thought instead of ignoring it. Binders for the paperwork that runs a life: an IEP, a lease, an immigration file, a professional licence, a set of welder qualifications. Planners for a wedding seating chart, a packing list, a college application season.

If you need one notes app across every device you own, a subscription is the right tool and there are excellent ones. If what you need is one specific record kept in one specific place, these do that for free or a one-time price and never ask you to sign in.
