Swipe, shortlist & share baby names

Every feature, from the first launch.

No account, no login, no cloud. Everything runs on your device and works fully offline — nothing in this post is hidden behind a wall.

What Namesake does

Namesake turns the overwhelming task of choosing a baby name into something genuinely fun. Swipe through a handpicked catalog of 80+ names, each with its meaning, origin, and a brief style note that helps you picture it on a real kid. Love it, save it to maybe, or skip it — your shortlist builds itself as you go.

When you’re ready to compare, drag your favorites into a ranked order and share a clean, readable shortlist with your partner via iMessage, Notes, or AirDrop. No logins, no cloud, no ads — just two people getting to “yes” faster.

Name data, ratings, and rankings are stored entirely on-device with SwiftData, so Namesake works on a plane, in the delivery room, or anywhere else.

• Swipe deck with love / maybe / no verdicts • Detailed view: meaning, origin, sibling-fit note • Drag-to-rank shortlist for loved and maybe names • Filter by gender, origin, and name length • Shareable shortlist card — no account needed • 100 % offline, SwiftData on-device

What's inside

  • Swipe Deck — A card-based swipe interface cycles through the curated name catalog. Each card shows the name, gender marker, origin tag, and a one-line meaning. Swipe right to love, up for maybe, left for no. Swiped cards can be revisited via a filter on the shortlist.
  • Shortlist — Loved and maybe names appear in a ranked shortlist. Drag handles let the user reorder favorites. Each row shows the name, verdict badge, and a chevron into the detail view. A share button generates a clean shortlist card.
  • Name Detail — Full-screen detail shows meaning, language of origin, historical note, pronunciation guide, and a sibling-fit note pairing it with complementary names. Verdict picker lets the user change their rating at any time.
  • Filters — A bottom-sheet filter panel lets users narrow the swipe deck by gender (girl / boy / neutral), origin family (English, Latin, Celtic, Nordic, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, other), and name length (short ≤4, medium 5–6, long 7+). Filters persist across sessions via SwiftData.

Why we built it

Name-picker apps are either giant searchable databases (overwhelming) or require sign-up, subscriptions, or constant internet — expecting parents want a low-friction swipe experience that quickly produces a short, shareable list they can actually agree on.

What makes it different

Namesake is a fully offline swipe-deck name shortlister: a tight, curated 80-name catalog with rich meaning and sibling-fit context, drag-to-rank ordering, and a one-tap shareable card — built with SwiftData and zero backend, unlike subscription or account-gated naming apps such as Nameberry or BabyCenter.

Who it's for

Hobbyists who want a tool that respects their time, their gear, and their offline life.
