Gramwise

Cups to grams, done right — 321 ingredients, each with its own density

A cup of flour is 125 g and a cup of sugar is 200 g, so one factor can never be right. Gramwise carries grams-per-cup for every ingredient, gets packed vs loose sugar, spooned vs scooped flour, egg sizes and butter sticks right, and scales a pasted recipe line by line. Free and offline.

What you can do in Gramwise on the web

1

321 per-ingredient densities

Flours, sugars, fats, dairy, eggs, liquids, leaveners, grains, nuts, baking aids, chocolate, fruits and spices — grams per US cup from USDA FoodData Central, King Arthur Baking, Joy of Baking, Bob's Red Mill and Cook's Illustrated.

2

The edge cases other converters flatten

All-purpose flour spooned (125 g) or scooped (156 g), brown sugar packed (220 g) or loose (145 g), powdered sugar sifted (100 g) or not (120 g) — a toggle, with the percentage difference spelled out.

3

Converts both directions, any unit

Volume to weight and weight back to volume across tsp, tbsp, fl oz, cups, pints, quarts, mL and litres, and grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds — with a common-measures table for the ingredient you picked.

4

Recipe scaler that reads your paste

Paste a recipe and the parser takes whole numbers, decimals, 1/2-style fractions and unicode ½ ⅓ ¾, recognises the unit and matches the ingredient — then scales every quantified line to your servings and weighs it, keeping unquantified lines verbatim.

5

Egg sizer

Peewee through jumbo with USDA in-shell, out-of-shell, yolk and white grams, and the equivalent count in any other size — because three jumbos weigh as much as four smalls.

6

Butter calculator

Sticks, tablespoons, cups, grams and ounces converted four ways off the 113.4 g US stick, with the stick reference table bakers keep taped inside a cupboard door.

Questions

Is the web version of Gramwise free?+

Yes. Sign in with a free All Things AI account and use every screen — no subscription, no in-app purchases.

Where is my data stored?+

Only in this browser's local storage. Nothing you enter is sent to our servers, so we can't see it, back it up, or restore it. Clearing site data, a private window, or another device starts empty. Export a backup from the in-app menu to keep it.

Do I need an account?+

You can read about the app without one, but you must sign in to open it. Sign-in is free and takes a few seconds with Google.

How is the web version different from the Gramwise iPhone app?+

The recipe parser is text only — the iPhone app can take a photo of a recipe card, and here you paste or type the lines. Ingredient matching is word-overlap scoring, so an unusual name (“farro flour”) may find no density; the line is still scaled, just not weighed. Densities are published averages. Your flour on a humid day is not a lab sample — the point is to get within a few grams instead of 40.
